Welcome to Pixels2Pigment! The home of the Color Managed Digital Workflow for Photographers

An optimized photography workflow from Pixels to Pigment

An experienced educator, photographer Martin Bailey has shared his knowledge and love of photography with the world in over 350 audio and video Podcasts, and taught photography, color management and printing first hand to workshop and seminar participants around the globe.

Martin's indepth understanding of digital color management, and ability to effectively share this knowledge, led to his inclusion into X-Rite's elite Coloratti and he is also the author of the Craft & Vision ebook "Making The Print : Printing Techniques for the Digital Photographer (A Masterclass)".

We're Bringing it to You!

Following many requests for first hand tuition, after two August seminars in Japan, we're visiting the US, Canada in September and the UK October, to help you streamline your digital workflow from pixel to pigment (capture to output).

Who is This For?

Lightroom users will gain the most from this seminar, but photographers of all levels, using the software of your choice, will come away with some gems that will transform your shooting experience and digital workflow.

No worries if you're just getting started. Although we'll assume a basic understanding of your camera gear and computer, straightforward terms and practical demonstrations will bring you up to speed in no time, and we build on that to the point that there's still plenty to learn, even for the most advanced photographer. Everyone will come away with a streamlined, color managed digital workflow and we'll remove any frustration that you might have had with your printing in the past too.

What Should I Bring?

Bring a digital camera, ideally DSLR, though a compact camera with some manual controls will also work fine. There isn't a lot of shooting during the seminar itself, but we will do some exercises to help explain some of the points discussed, and hopefully make time to go outside and stretch our legs and work on a few techniques at the same time. We may also be able to organize a photo walk on the day before or after the seminar, and it would be great to be able to shoot together then too. This will be free of charge of course, and ideas for walk routes etc. are very welcome!

For the classroom exercises, just a medium zoom (24-70mm) or a 70-200mm lens should be fine, but if we do a photo walk, you might need to cover a wider focal length range, but that will depend on your shooting style, so you will know what to bring. The same goes for a tripod. You won't need it for the classroom exercises, but if we shoot together on a walk, you might want to bring a tripod along.

Some of the venues will not have tables to work on or enough power for everyone, but if you have a laptop with reasonable battery life, and it's not too much trouble to bring, do so. This is not vital to the course though, and you won't miss out without a laptop. Please sign up for the newsletter for your location below, and you will receive information specific to your location before the event.

Also bring one or two of your favorite photos on a memory stick or memory card, as we'll be selecting two or three photos from the group to make Breathing Color EasyWrappe Pro Gallery Wraps from, which you will take home if your image is chosen. Make sure it's a standard 3:2 aspect ratio image though (as opposed to square or panorama) as we will have limited sizes available.

Testimonials

Martin Bailey’s Toronto Pixels 2 Pigment workshop was easily the most productive educational experience I’ve enjoyed in the several years since I took up the hobby. His deep knowledge, incisive wit, infectious enthusiasm, brutal honesty and refreshingly original perspective on just about every facet of photography kept me riveted for all 16 hours. Most amazingly, he took my printer which had, over the last 4 years, churned out prints which varied in quality from downright insipid to completely horrid and helped transform it, in one fascinating afternoon, into a machine which now consistently output prints and canvases which simply take my breath away.

I attended Martin Bailey's Pixel 2 Pigment workshop here in Okinawa. Martin has a hands on teaching style and expertly presents his extensive knowledge of not only printing, but workflow management and storage. Of course, the color management and printing are the key factors in this workshop and he was able to methodically take everyone through what many people consider a complicated and fearful subject (at least I thought so) and break it down into easy steps. I would jump at the chance to take another workshop presented by Martin Bailey.
